Independent Electricity System Operator

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) manages Ontario’s power system, operates the province’s wholesale electricity market, plans for its immediate and long-term electricity needs, and guides its energy conservation initiatives through the Save on Energy portfolio.

Project

The Powering Tomorrow website was launched in 2017. It brings together content that focuses on the IESO's role in piloting, studying and supporting advanced technologies that  will prepare Ontario's energy system for a safe and reliable future. Micro-grids, energy storage, distributed energy resources, and hydraulic air compression are just a few examples of the content ML & CO developed for this site. We worked closely with internal subject matter experts and external researchers in academia and industry on this assignment.

Alectra Utilities

Alectra Utilities is a newly-formed electricity distribution and integrated energy solutions company (est. February 2017), headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. The company provides energy solutions and services to nearly one million customers in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe area.

Project

Our Sustainability Journey (2018) is Alectra's first sustainability report featuring environmental, social and economic highlights for the 2017 reporting year. This is a hybrid annual report/sustainability update, with external assurance provided for specific environmental indicators, rather than a full GRI report. ML & CO developed all content for this report, based on interviews with a wide variety of internal subject matter experts. We also worked closely with the internal brand team and external agency to help set the tone for this first sustainability report.

Strengthening Communities through Energy Efficiency (2018) is a 4-page booklet featuring information about end-use electricity consumption in Ontario municipal buildings, as well as the opportunities for communities to become more energy efficient through a variety of energy management approaches. ML & CO developed the content for this booklet based on a commissioned research study by the IESO.

Power Perspectives (2018) is a 24-page magazine-style publication with features on innovation and the challenges of integrating new technology into Ontario's energy market, as well as updates on the transformation of the energy market resulting from increased competition. ML & CO developed all content, based on research and interviews with internal and external subject matter experts.

is one of North America’s best-known brands, with over 23 million customers, 85,000 employees and over 2,400 retail locations across North America.

Project

ML & CO. was invited to work with a team of writers on the development of TD Bank's 2014 Corporate Responsibility Report. We interviewed subject matter experts from across North America on issues ranging from customer satisfaction and mobile banking to data security and climate change mitigation. Based on these interviews, we developed content for internal approval, and also worked with the other writers on the team to ensure a consistent narrative that reflected the bank's key milestones.

is the self-regulatory body that ensures registered occupational therapists are competent, ethical, accountable and working in support of the public interest.

Project

A two-minute video to introduce the new Registrar to over 5,000 registered occupational therapists working in all regions of Ontario. The video is part of a multi-year engagement strategy that ML & CO. also developed for the College. For this assignment, we developed the storyboard, based on an extensive interview, and managed the creative crew through production to delivery.

Project

Project: A 12-page booklet (French/English tumble) that provides an overview of Export Development Canada’s approach to Corporate Social Responsibility for prospective clients. ML & CO provided content development and creative development services, including design, layout and production.

A 44-page online, interactive PDF and accompanying 12-page Summary Report (print). ML & CO conducted all interviews, developed artwork and managed overall design and production. This report won an IABC Excel award (2010) in the Social Responsibility category.

is the largest electricity transmission and distribution company in Ontario, with assets valued at over $17 billion.

Project

A 12-page annual report produced for members of Hydro One’s pension plan (see www.sedar.com). ML & CO. was hired to develop content, including research and interviews with internal subject matter experts, and provide recommendations for overall theme and key messaging. ML & CO. also wrote Hydro One's 2010 Report to Members.

Project

A 24-page booklet (2018) that provides industrial and commercial electricity customers with information about electricity pricing, energy efficiency programs and demand management initiatives. With practical information and case studies, the goal is to show customers how energy efficiency can improve competitive advantage and overall efficiency.  ML & CO developed all content, based on interviews with customers as well as internal and external subject matter experts, and worked closely with the design team throughout the design process.

We recently completed a rewrite for this section of the IESO's website. It provides information about how to apply for financial support from the Conservation Fund, which supports innovative programs, technologies and research in the area of electricity conservation in Ontario.

Junior Achievement

is a not-for-profit organization that helps prepare middle and high school students for work in the global economy by providing programs in entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

Project

ML & CO was pleased to once again work with Junior Achievement’s design agency to produce the 2014 annual report. Together, we worked on key messaging and thematic development, and with these building blocks in place, ML & CO produced all copy and managed copy approvals.

is a community-owned energy company providing electricity and related services to more than 365,000 customers residing or owning a business in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in central Ontario.

Project

ML & CO was hired to write, direct and produce a 2-minute video about an innovative technology called ventilation on demand, which can be used in settings such as commercial kitchens and restaurants to reduce electricity consumption. The video explains how the technology works and features three businesses speaking  of the benefits for their bottom-line.

The Ontario Energy Board is Ontario’s independent energy regulator. Its mission is to ensure a sustainable, reliable energy sector that helps Ontario consumers get value from their natural gas and electricity services.

Project

We recently completed an extensive rewrite of the Ontario Energy Board's website. This included content development for all sections of the new site, creating a tonality that aligned with the organization's new brand, as well as some deep editing of content from the legacy site.

Project

In support of Ontario’s energy conservation targets, ML & CO was asked to produce several case studies in 2015, each one highlighting the Save on Energy provincial incentives available for companies that undergo energy-efficient retrofits and underscoring the related energy and cost savings. ML & CO interviewed each business, coordinated copy approvals and managed photography shoots at each location.

A series of 17 case studies and corporate overview document that highlight PowerStream’s achievements in the area of Smart Grid technologies, including micro-grid technology, smart meters, transformer loading technology, digital fault indicators, electric vehicles, self-healing grid technology, lithium-ion battery technology and smart grid technology. ML & CO. was contracted to develop the content for each case study, provide creative concepts for the case studies and a presentation folder, and manage overall production and delivery.

This is a 28-page research report for the Yeates School of Graduate Studies. It's partly a review of various programs and initiatives, and partly an update on some interesting research projects. We interviewed all the people whose work is highlighted, wrote all the copy and worked with an internal resource to manage all copy approvals.

A series of 6 two-minute videos, each focusing on a different research area in the Faculty of Science. The videos were developed as companion pieces for a 12-page marketing brochure that ML & CO. was also hired to develop. For the video project, we interviewed each faculty member, developed a storyboard, and managed the video team on creative and production. This was the first video series for the Faculty of Science, and our assignment was also to establish a look, tone and feel that aligned with Ryerson’s overarching brand.

is the largest municipal electricity distribution company in Canada, serving approximately 705,000 customers in the City of Toronto.

Project

A 54-page online Corporate Social Responsibility report. ML&CO. conducted interviews with all internal subject matter experts, developed third-party testimonials, wrote all content including the Stakeholder Engagement Matrix and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) report card, before handing the project off to Toronto Hydro’s design team. The 2010 report is the fourth CSR report that ML & CO. produced for this client.

Hydro One

owns and operates 96 per cent of Ontario’s electricity transmission network and is the largest electricity distributor in Ontario, with 1.3 million residential customers. Hydro One’s service territory covers approximately 75 per cent of the province.

Project

ML & CO. was invited to write Hydro One's first Corporate Responsibility report, released in 2016. For this assignment, we conducted interviews with all internal subject matter experts and worked closely with them to develop an overarching narrative that reflected key accomplishments and milestones for the year. We also worked to support the project leaders with advice on infographics, charts and imagery, as well as making recommendations for content management and CR strategy.
